Stone by stone: from quarry to imaginative play

Holker Hall needed a play space that captured the magic of their gardens and felt truly connected to the estate. They wanted something unique that would delight toddlers and young children while reflecting the spirit of the place. The estate also owns local quarries, so incorporating their stone into the design was a must.

We created a playful, imaginative space that feels like stepping into a forgotten part of history. The play area centres around a ‘lost building’, where foundation stones peek through and a large, split stone table doubles as a climbing feature.

We included a giant hollow log and an accessible junior play tower featuring a pulley system for creative play. To enhance the natural feel, we crafted living willow tunnels and a charming fireplace and chimney from willow, bringing an earthy, magical vibe to the space.

A silver birch tree, planted in the middle of the stone table by the estate’s head gardener, will grow to enhance the sense of discovery. Over time, the space will feel like a hidden gem waiting to be found.
The TouchWood team worked closely with the estate’s quarry team to ensure the stone features were just right and the collaboration paid off beautifully.

Play without barriers

We made sure the design welcomed everyone. The play elements are mostly ground-level with wide-open spaces for easy movement. Handrails on the giant log steps ensure the tower and pulley system are accessible to all.
