Touchwood help Create UK’s largest-ever indoor/outdoor timber play experience
Client Type: Private Destination Play
Location: Hull, Yorkshire
William’s Den owners Christian and Tor Carver wanted to create a unique indoor/outdoor play destination on their farmland. They wanted William’s Den to be a ‘nostalgic nod’ to a bygone era of child’s play where children were free to explore and play in natural surroundings.
William’s Den includes a 475 sqm play barn in which our specialist design team has brought the outside-in, to enable children to play whatever the weather. The bespoke play features include a 25-metre granite installation, complete with a cascading stream. pool and a Rainmaker to simulate a rain shower. A unique six-metre high Ancient Oak links to a tree house, which incorporates swings, balancing pole branches, bridges and a three metre slide off a deck down into a sandpit below. To emulate the great outdoors, the barn is filled with natural light from huge windows and plenty of fresh air from huge sliding doors.
With the internal elements of the project, we were able to integrate some softer woods such as Hazel and Ash, into our production which provided a wider variety of interesting texture and colours in the timbers.
After only a few months the visitor numbers have exceeded 50,000 to this relatively remote venue.

How much does it cost..?
We have delivered projects for £1,000 and £1M. Whatever the budget, every job goes through the same meticulous process and we take equal care over the installation of a single swing as we do for an entire playground.
