What is bespoke playground design?

In our eyes, bespoke playground design is creating unique playgrounds for every client that include tailored features and structures to encourage exceptional play value in line with your goals.

This means designing a playscape unique to each client based on our knowledge and expertise at creating playscapes that engage and inspire children.

How is Touchwood truly bespoke?

Since we started our journey in 2002 we’ve put a lot of thought into what ‘bespoke’ really means. We started as a small and agile team, creating everything from scratch on every project. That meant designing, learning about play value and how to improve play experiences to encourage skills and relationship development in children, all whilst figuring out how to erect incredible wooden structures on challenging sites and make them safe.

As we’ve grown, the only logical way to continue offering a completely bespoke playground design service was to maintain this approach and invest in our team and build an incredible in-house offering.

Today, we have four core teams that work with our clients from the moment they get in touch until the moment we ‘hand over the keys’ to a playground. We are a truly end-to-end offering meaning that any client of ours is fully supported through every phase of their playground creation journey from one place.

This approach gives us total visibility on every aspect of a playgrounds design. As a result, our playgrounds are truly bespoke, with no two the same. Each playscape we create has carefully considered play routes, deep thought put into the structural integrity and considerations around place and space to make sure we create a playground that does everything you need it to whilst wowing visitors.

Our design process

Every project is unique, but in general we stick to our four step process when creating playgrounds. There are some additional stages if we support you through the funding process, but in general our design process is outlined below.

Step 1

Concept Design

Get in touch with our Concept Design team. Then, development, site survey, collaborative design, and pricing assurance.

Step 2

Technical Design

Technical design and pre-manufacture; we send technical drawings for you to sign off and we start pre-manufacturing at the wood yard.

Step 3

Manufacture & Install

Installation and sign-off -with as many pre-manufactured items as possible we install. Then our independent play safety inspector signs off the play area.

Step 4

Maintenance

After-sales and maintenance support - we will issue you with a detailed operation and maintenance manual, a technical handover, and the option of our maintenance service packages.

we design with play types in mind

In addition to our design process which ensures we create unique and engaging playgrounds in line with your goals we also try make sure each design we create includes the four main play types. Our founders vision was to bring classic play to modern children, encouraging adventure and development. Making sure we include all these play types in our designs means our playgrounds inherently present more play value than an ‘off the shelf’
playground installation.

Physical Play

Physical play is all about building a child’s muscles, bones and physical skills.

We create features that develop a child’s skills but also engage them to explore and interact with structures that challenge them and intertwine with fantasy and social play.

We use crawlspaces, ropewalks, monkeybars, climbingtowers, slides and much more to encourage physical play.

social play

Social play is all about encouraging play with others to teach children how to take turns, cooperate and share.

This encourages longer play times in commercial playgrounds and in schools and encourages friendship building.

We use water play, sand play, talking tubes, kinetic sculptures and much more to encourage social play.

constructive play

Constructive play is all about experimentation. Getting children to draw, create music and build things.

This helps children develop their movement skills and become less clumsy, and understand distance and size.

We encourage this play through water play features, large wooden spoons in sand pits to build things with, wooden blocks made from logs to stack and much more.

fantasy play

Fantasy play is all about encouraging children to use their imagination and develop communication skills.

We include props in our playgrounds, build wooden kitchens, ice-cream stands, houses and caricature objects like trains and climbing towers shaped like robots or giants.

Our bespoke features bring a child’s imagination to life.
